About to quit my horribly un-satisfying, yet well-paying IT job and maybe go back to school or get a job at a different company. Haven't decided yet.

Trying to get an IT job to get out of my horribly un-satisfying and also terribly paying job. Also reading.

What do you do in your current IT position? I feel we're in slightly flipped positions at the moment.

I'm currently moving up the ladder within my company. Don't particularly love what I do but the pay is far to good (for my age) to leave at the moment.

Other than that looking at houses/apartments and spending far too much money on motorbikes.

I'd love to leave my job and do something different but couldn't live without the money at the moment D:

Tier 2 helpdesk. It's more prominent than tier 1, especially for someone my age (I work with 3 guys who are 45+ and one who's 29). It's at a massive multi-billion dollar finance company though, so we all get paid really well for the work. Tier 2 is basically the desk-side version of IT at my office. So tier 1 typically handles all the calls (only inside the company ofc), and tier 2 typically goes desk-side, but we often step in for each other. Each tier 2 has their assigned floors (I have the Private Equity floors, both of them), but if I'm out for some reason, one of the tier 1 people will step in for me. Likewise, if I'm at my desk and don't have anything to do, I'll be taking calls.

All-in-all, it seriously isn't a bad gig, I just don't want to do IT for the rest of my life. I'm going to try and see if I can get the next available Business Analyst position in any of the business units (just... hopefully not PE), because what I really want is to be on the business side of things, not tech.

Thanks for listening to my rant haha

One thing I've learnt if your employed in a big company side stepping is a lot easier. (assuming you make a good impression / meet the right people).

I went from working Customer Service to IT Help desk to Accounting to Accounting Manager with no prior training in accounting.

I've done the same sort of thing and it's the sort of job that just slowly drains you over time, either you beat the drain and accept it or you get out. At the moment I'm in second year of uni revising for exams and I keep wondering if it's really worth it at times, because academia isn't really my sort of thing. I'm more practical when it comes to modelling / implementing a system as opposed to "here's the maths and theory, go wild".

Yeah, connections really can be everything in terms of getting ahead.

I've just finished a 4 year college course. I was doing part-time web dev for a company for a bit which was going to turn into a full time job I left. My college offered me the chance to do a PhD, so I decided to take that. We're working on the funding application at the moment. I'm working as a summer intern in the Embedded Systems Research center until we know if I have funding for the PhD or not. So all is well at the moment!

I always knew Pot Ducky would turn into a leather-clad biker.
