I read about this a while back where a company in the UK was tasked to create a fully working UAV in a week from scratch using this Rapid Prototyping, and they did it! It truly is fantastic stuff. ^^
The idea is that using various polys we could lower our demand on natural resources such as wood and various ores. Unfortunately they're not unlimited so eventually we're going to run into issues and that's where this sort of thing comes into play.
They are already working on it replicating flesh. I have heard though some hospitals already can replicate organs but this would be different.
When I read this, I was thinking of those 3D printers that basically just stack paper until it's the correct height. It's really cool, but you need a REALLY old printer, and past that, it's not very hard, you just need the software.
