Well, my brother got a Vista laptop; yay him. : And he decided that he wanted to try out Garrys Mod and play on his laptop. Well, I let him download Steam and I let him log onto my account and try out Garrys Mod there to see if he would like it. Turns out when he runs Garry's Mod it loads to the Main screen but when the main screen fades in the choices and the big g in the right corner it closes and says 'hl2 has stopped running' I'm just wondering on how do I fix this so he can get on Garry's Mod on his laptop. I'm searching steam for some tips as well but since this community is full of inteligent programers with Vistas left and right, I decided to post here first. (Not a suck-up line.)
What other Source games does he have installed? Garry's Mod refused to run until I installed HL2 and HL2 EP1. I'm on Vista Ultimate x64.
Vista home premium 32-bit here. Works fine for me. Make sure you have at least ONE source game installed.
No, I'll tell him to. He's currently doing some school work so it'll be 30 minutes to an hour before we try this. Thanks for your help, I'll post again if anything else is needed.
Double Post Still doesn't work. Get the same thing after starting up HL2, which when starting that up, theres a platform that doesn't respond.
Garry's mod and many other games get that if you DON'T have a Nvidia or ATI gfx card. Most vista laptops only come with, well, Quite crappy 3rd party Gfx card. When I was using my nanny brand new Vista laptop, It have dual core and was very nice, But the Gfx card was some really rubbishy one, Heck, the 32mb one on my mac actually beats it! So post your Gfx card, If you don't know how to do that its Start > Run > Dxdiag . Hoped it helped, Killermon
I had the same problem, I did some research and this worked and helped me so it should help you do as I say! Right Click Steam in icon try Games>Right Click GMOD>Set Launch Options Enter this "-dxlevel 81" without the " As I said I had this SAME exact problem and I did this and it worked. It should start garry's mod in a window mode so play Single Player any map for 5 seconds spawn something random and then close gmod don't just disconnect but close it and reopen it and select video settings or options or whatever then video and select full screen if you want to play in full screen.
