Well, I accomplished it, but my god did it take a ton of effort. The process itself is obviously not all that difficult, load up the live/install cd and set your partitions and which hard drive, etc. The hard part came when Grub2, for some reason, over-wrote my MBR even though I had it set to install only on the external hard drive. I guess I should have just unplugged my two hard drives... But I didn't want to get a screwdriver. After about 4+ hours of screwing around with Grub Rescue (mind you, this is over the past week, hence why I haven't been active), I decided to just say, "Screw it" and load up the Win 7 cd and repair the MBR with the commands: and Now my question/theory is: do you think booting from the external hard drive will re-re-overwrite the MBR? Also, it's my birthday if seven days. (saying this because I have no other idea as to what the post icon should be:snig::smile:☺)
Damn... You were like the one person I was thinking could answer this, and possibly Teddi. I've only had a little experience with Linux (Fedora/Ubuntu/Yellow Dog), but I have had a lot with OSs, BIOSs, and booting from cds (gets quite annoying having to take them in and out repeatedly, esp. Linux ones, because they mostly eject when you restart the computer).
you can try it... if it did it to one it would probally do it to the other. and "too lazy to get a screwdiver" = facepalm
Well, Win 7 boots fine (using the standard bios for it), but when trying to boot from the EHD, I get that damned "Grub error: file not found" thing that always causes so much trouble. I am at a loss as to what to do now. I could just reinstall Linux on the EHD I guess. Thoughts?
Well, I made a live CD for Fedora too... But I doubt that is the focus of the question. Eh, I don't know, I guess I just want an operating system in my pocket with all my files on it, and Linux seemed like the best choice because I have dealt with it extensively before, it's free (not that much of a reason because I have a Windows CD too), and it's half-way made for dual-booting.
