Windows Media Player can't play .mid files, and oddly enough Quicktime can. o_O

Anyways, I would guess they used this for testing of Window's sound systems, and they include it just for the heck of it.

Also, just to say to the people who say that it's "midi", it's .mid on my computer also (older version of .midi?).

my windows media player can play it....

though it may be because I have an opensource plugin program called ffdshow that lets me watch all kinds of video codecs (and I guess sound too), if you don't have it I recommend it

You should just get the KLite codec pack. Fills in 99% of all the audio and video codecs you will ever use.
