Check first page for a link to Arma for free, then you need to purchase the OA expansion though. It's protected quite while, including registry checks, "acquiring" it probably isn't an option.
The main map is Chernarus, a map not found on ArmA2: OA, you do need ArmA2 free or the real thing to play. I sugest using SixUpdater to keep the installation of the mod simple. It's nearly impossible to find a server in the EU or NA that isn't full, and thats 30 or so servers. :S
Guessing we'll just have to spam join a server until we are all in. And so as a confirmation Arma2: Free & OA from Steam will work together to play DayZ? Don't want a friend of mine buying it to have it not work.
I'm trying it now, but several people say you can. Just installed A2:Free, DL'ing OA currently. Is there any explanation of how/what to download from the DayZ website? Edit; Currently 50%, 2 MB/s about 40 mins left if it sticks at this speed.

Just redownloading the free version and installing due to messing up, then will test! Looks hard to get into servers though, saw about 6-7 but they were all full constantly at like 30-50/50.
considering the arma 2: free doesnt support mods, i dont think thats the one you want, if it works oh well, but the proper one has more stuff
The free one is easy enough to "acquire" anyway, I don't plan on buying a game and an expansion just to play a free mod. But we'll see. I downloaded a .iso and installed OA to save time and transferred it over to Steam but it's being dumb, gonna just reinstall the whole thing and see what it's doing tomorrow. On from 10pm GMT. Do seem to be seeing some map requirements when trying to join places though. Is there a list of recommended downloads somewhere/how to install (where to place them)? (esp Chernarus)

So far I have managed to connect to a server, BUT it only get's as far as a black screen that says "Loading"... no errors so far EDIT; HOLY FUCK i got on and it's dark and i dont know what im doing and im just prone here oh god i dont want to make light in case zombies come

oh, i got that missing DLC map error or whatever, i just coped my ArmA2 "Addons" folder into the Operation Arrowhead folder Map: http://community.bistudio.com/wikidata/images/3/39/ARMA2_Map_of_Chernarus.jpg I figured out by looking at a train station that I'm at the very south at "Balota", weird russian names. You usually spawn along the southern coast aye. Between Chernogorsk and Kamenka. If you guys are getting the game via steam, it should have the 1.6 patch already on there, only two servers I've seen use the 1.609746 patch. Just played a nice long time with one character; investigated an airfield, got shot at by a Bandit, killed him, took his rifle, spent all of my time afterwards running around on 3000 (Out of 12000) blood, got lost, found out where I was again, ate some beans. All in the dark too! Quite fun.
Do we need to download a map off a site (like you do sometimes with Gmod) to get on the servers, if so where would you get them / place them? Sounds cool though, haven't watched any night videos yet.
Reading around, you need to buy both ArmA 2 and ArmA 2: OA to be able to play it. ArmA 2 has the map, OA is the rest.
